Jailbreak Your Phone: International SIM Card

Jailbreak Your Phone: International SIM Card

Let's face it, most of us have a panic attack if we're away from our phones for longer than 10 minutes. It seems almost absurd to think that vacation could be enjoyable without our precious cell phones by our side. You won't need to worry on your next vacation because taking your cell phone has become easier than ever! Instead of renting or purchasing a phone abroad, jailbreak your own phone and use it with an international SIM card. There are a few steps to go through in order to do this but it's worth it if you want to have the comfort of your own phone while you're abroad.

Different wireless operators have different locations where international cell phone service is available. This depends on the type of phone—whether it is a GSM or a CDMA cell phone. GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is available throughout Europe, Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and some parts of Asia and the Middle East.  AT&T and T-Mobile both use GSM networks, and have extensive coverage available abroad.

CDMA phones are used mainly in the US, with the operator Verizon Wireless, and one of Sprint’s networks. Verizon Wireless has roaming agreements with carriers in other countries, and CDMA users can roam in Taiwan, China, Guam, Guatemala, Indonesia, Vietnam, Israel, India, and New Zealand. Some Verizon phones have both CDMA and GSM in their “world phones”.

Jailbreaking your cell phone means that you can alter your phone with certain codes and then the phone can be used with any carrier, with international SIM cards and so on. With jailbreaking your phone, you can escape expensive international fees and data charges or roaming costs. Jailbreaking a smartphone such as an iPhone will make it possible to do other things, too, installing applications from third parties and having full control of your phone.

To learn where to jailbreak or unlock your phone, the Internet is the best source. For the iPhone, there are sites such as Jailbreak.me or online tutorials and online forums that explain the process. It’s not even illegal—the US Copyright Office has stated that jailbreaking is legal.

For ordinary cellphones—that is, not smart phones—jailbreaking a phone will not give you access to third party applications, but will allow you to use international SIM cards. Carriers can unlock your phone for you—some carriers will give you a code to unlock your phone so that international SIM cards can be used. Those with carriers that don’t can turn to third parties for help, however.

Cell-phone unlocking and jailbreaking are not illegal services; however, there are some disadvantages. Jailbreaking an iPhone will mean losing your warranty; it has not been decided yet, either, whether allowing third parties to unlock or jailbreak your phone for you is legal. Messing around with a phone without professional or expert guidance can also be dangerous if done incorrectly.

However, for overseas travel, jailbreaking or unlocking your phone so it can carry an international SIM card will ensure that you can make calls in the overseas country for local rates, rather than paying the fees your American cell phone service provides, lowering prices and ensuring that you won’t have to worry about coverage wherever you travel to.
